Umeå University researchers can publish open access at no cost in Springer Nature open access journals. Read more about the terms of our agreement with the publisher for 2024 and what it means for you here.
The open access publishing fee (APC, article processing charge) has been pre-paid through an agreement between the library and Springer Nature. In this national consortia agreement, research funders the Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas and Vinnova contribute with approximately 50% of the funding. The agreement applies to Springer Nature open access journals.
Terms and conditions
You must be the corresponding author, i.e., the one handling communication with the publisher and journal.
Your Umeå University affiliation must be stated in the published article.
Use your university email ending with @umu.se. The email domain is often used to recognise your eligibility.
The agreement applies to article types “original paper”, “review paper”, “brief communication” and “continuous education”.
Your article will be published under a CC BY license.
How the publishing process works
Knowing how the process works will help you make use of the library’s agreement in the most efficient way.
Connected to the university network
The submission process works best if you are connected to the university network (via internet on campus or VPN) when you submit your manuscript in a BMC or Springer Open journal. This will enable you to be automatically recognised as an Umeå University-affiliated author.
If you’re not connected to the network, select ”I accept responsibility for paying the processing charge on this article”. The “membership” and “discount” options do not apply to the type of agreement that the library has with Springer Nature.
Confirm your affiliation on Springer’s publishing platform
The actual verification of your affiliation to Umeå University will take place upon article acceptance. Confirm your institutional affiliation on Springer’s publishing platform by choosing “Umea University” in the dropdown list.
