American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Umeå University researchers can publish open access based on the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model in some American Society for Microbiology (ASM) journals. Read more about the terms of our agreement with the publisher for 2025 and what it means for you here.

The library subscribes to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) journals. In 2025, ASM will make six of its subscription journals open access based on the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model. Articles published in 2025 will remain open access even if the journal reverts to a subscription journal in 2026. Authors at subscribing institutions will receive guaranteed open access publishing regardless of whether the sustainability target is met.

More about Subscribe to Open

Subscribe to Open (S2O) is a model for funding open access to scientific journals. This model works by publishers converting their subscription journals into open access journals for one year at a time. If enough subscribers renew their subscriptions, all or a selection of journals are made freely available without article processing charges (APCs) for one year to all.

Additional charges apply

The S2O model is usually free of charge and without article processing charges (APCs). ASM does not charge APCs but adds other fees called “Page Charges” and “Supplemental Material”. As an author, you are responsible for these charges. However, you will get a small discount on these charges if you belong to Umeå University because Umeå University Library is a subscribing institution.

  • You must be the corresponding author, i.e., the one handling communication with the publisher and journal.
  • Your Umeå University affiliation must be stated in the published article. You must use your university email ending with @umu.se and your ORCID to be identified as an Umeå University affiliated author.
  • See information for each journal for article types.
  • The agreement applies to articles accepted and published in 2025.
  • Your article will be published under a CC BY licence.
  • The author is responsible for any additional charges.

How the publishing process works

You submit your manuscript to ASM journals electronically via the eJournalPress (eJP) online submission and peer review system.

You must create an author account when you publish in an ASM journal for the first time. You can then use the same account to submit to all ASM journals.

ASM requires corresponding authors to include their ORCID; or register for an ORCID during submission.
