FAQ Graduation Ceremony

On this web page you will find frequently asked questions and answers regarding the Graduation Ceremony.

Who is invited to the Graduation Ceremony on 23 May?

Students from all international Master’s Programmes at Umeå University expecting to graduate this spring (or who have recently graduated).  This is for students who will be receiving a degree certificate from Umeå University.

An invitation is sent to all students each department/programme has informed the ceremonial team to invite.

What time should I arrive on 23 May?

All graduating students should arrive at Aula Nordica by 14:30 at the very latest on Thursday 23 May.

I didn’t receive an invitation, what should I do?

Please check your spam folder (both Umu-e-mail and private e-mail address), if you cannot find the invitation there, please send us an e-mail

I am a Swedish student studying an International Master’s programme, can I attend the ceremony?

Yes, if you are studying an international Master’s programme and expect to graduate this spring (or have recently graduated), you are more than welcome.

Why do I need to sign up for the ceremony?

We will present all students participating in the ceremony and honour your accomplishments. We also need to prepare for light refreshments for graduating students and guests. In order for us to do this, we need you to sign up no later than 24 April. Only students that have signed up will be acknowledged on stage during the ceremony.

I have friends and family who want to attend the ceremony, can they?

Yes, they are welcome to attend the ceremony in Aula Nordica or join the celebrations via live.umu.se or via the English Facebook-page. To attend the ceremony in Aula Nordica, guests need to sign up no later than 8 May.

Can I bring children to the ceremony?

Yes, children are of course welcome to attend the ceremony. We recommend that you choose seating close to an exit or front row, in case you need to exit the ceremony. Remember to sign them up as guests.

I will not be able to finish my thesis this semester,  can I still come to the ceremony?

Since your department has chosen to nominate you, you are welcome to the ceremony. The role of Graduation Ceremony is ceremonial, which means you don't need to have finished your thesis to be able to participate in the ceremony.

If you will be continuing your thesis during next semester och next spring, you can participate in the ceremony next year instead, if you like.

I was supposed to finish my Master's degree after one year but I have now chosen to continue on to the second year of my programme, should I participate this year?

If you are continuing your studies for a second year, we recommend that you participate in next year's Graduation Ceremony since you can only participate once.

Can I attend the Graduation Ceremony more than once?

No. If you choose to attend the ceremony this year you can not participate next year.

I will not be able to attend the ceremony, should I sign up anyway?

If you are not able to attend the ceremony in person, please email us to indicate that you will not be able to participate on the 23rd of May.

Please respect your commitment and let us know if something prevents you from attending after you have signed up.

How will the ceremony work?

You will receive an e-mail with more detailed information about the ceremony a couple of days prior to the event. Please read all information in that e-mail. During the ceremony the Vice-Chancellor will give a speech and hand out congratulatory scrolls on stage to you as a graduating student. After the event there is a mingle with light refreshments and possibility to take photos with your classmates, etc. The ceremony takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Is there a dress code for the ceremony?

This is a festive and official celebration, so we are happy if you wear your finest clothes or national costume.

I am a student at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics. Is this the same event as the USBE Graduation Ceremony?

No, the USBE Graduation Ceremony is a separate event. But you can of course attend both if you like.
