How did studying at Umeå University help you achieve your career goals?

My education at Umeå University provided me with a broad view on management and offered different perspectives into finance and accounting. It also deepened my understanding of Swedish culture, particularly the values of work-life balance, collaboration, and creativity. These insights helped me to develop strategies that I used to build my professional network in Sweden.

What are your fondest memories from your time as a student at Umeå University?

Participating in the Buddy Programme was a highlight of my time at Umeå. It was a joy to connect with both Swedish and international students who helped me settle into life in Umeå with so many fun and well organized activities. One of my favorite memories is the first time I saw the Aurora Borealis with friends from university. Coming from Brazil, I was also fascinated by the seasonal changes, especially the midnight sun and the beautiful autumn colors of the trees.

It was a joy to connect with both Swedish and international students.

What have you been doing since you graduated?

After I earned my master's degree at Umeå University, I got a job as Financial Controller at Scania, and for the past 1.5 years I have been working in the intersection of Finance and Sustainability.

Can you describe your job responsiblities?

As the first ESG (environmental, social and governance) Controller at Scania, I assist my organization in navigating the complex landscape of sustainability regulations and reporting. My role involves collecting and analyzing data on ESG topics, which supports the company’s sustainability strategy.

What are your career goals for the next 5 years? 

I want to consolidate my knowledge in sustainability arena and become a reference in the area of ESG reporting.  In the future, I aim to assume a management position and being able to use Swedish as a working language. Most importantly, I want to continue doing work that is interesting, brings me joy, and makes me feel like I'm contributing to society.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering studying at Umeå University?

Focus on studying subjects that truly interest you and build strong relationships with your professors, as they can offer very good career advice. Meet as many students as possible and embrace the extreme weather; you’ll learn how to dress appropriately and discover many enjoyable outdoor activities.
