Children in the Arctic - health outcomes of living conditions, gender and racial oppression in the 1930s
The aim of this project, which the presenter is applying financial support for together with two colleagues, is to investigate the health outcomes of children who grew up in Arctic Sweden during the 1930s, a period known for social reforms and welfare expansion. This period, however, was also characterized by great socioeconomic differences, where the Arctic region lagged behind the rest of Sweden. Discriminatory practices derived from eugenic ideas further caused assault and racial oppression against the Swedish Indigenous and minority populations, the Sami and the Finns. Although it is well known that the Sami and the Finns were exposed to assault and harsh assimilation politics, our current knowledge of health effects of racial biological politics, is limited. One major obstacle has been the lack of individual data on health and living conditions during the period. The proposed project will break new ground by generating knowledge about health effects for the Sami and Finns exposed to racial biological politics. The project builds on a world-unique, recently systematized database, consisting of individual data on schoolchildren who participated in a large socio-medical survey performed in Arctic Sweden during the period 1929-1931. Linkages to population registers further enable us to carry out life-course analyses. The database allows us to examine how ethnic classification, gender, and socioeconomic inequalities affected childhood health in the 1930s and longevity up until today.
