Time Thursday 3 October, 2024 at 16:00 - 18:00
Place Auditorium, Umeå School of Architecture

Umeå School of Architecture warmly welcomes Gabrielė Šarkauskienė and Antanas Šarkauskas from ŠA Atelier to speak about and present their work and ethos as part of the public lecture series UMA Talks.

About ŠA Atelier

ŠA Atelier is a collective of two architects, Gabrielė Šarkauskienė and Antanas Šarkauskas. After completing their master’s studies at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in 2015, they gained work experience in Portugal and the Netherlands. Upon returning to Lithuania, they began joint creative activities under the name ŠA Atelier, which gradually became part of contemporary architecture participator. Beyond their design endeavors, Gabrielė and Antanas have also been active educators, serving as tutors for various architectural workshops from the atelier's inception. In 2023, they further extended their influence into academia, joining the Faculty of Architecture at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, where they now share their insights with the younger generation.

Professional field of interest

The activity of ŠA Atelier is largely directed towards the practical implementation of architecture, the design is often accompanied by the search of architecture as a cultural movement. Realizing that architecture very easily accepts utilitarian and progressive disciplines, the atelier duo is attracted to the artistic side of the profession, which would allow maintaining balance and creating a full-fledged humane environment. Their practice delves into themes such as the integration of organic and plant-based materials, the advancement of wooden architecture, material reuse, off-grid systems, and the reconstruction of existing structures. ŠA Atelier creative attention is focused on spatiality, sustainability ideas, practical craft and attention to details.

The lecture is held in English and will be presented by Sangram Shirke, Programme Responsible at Umeå School of Architecture.
