Umeå School of Architecture are delighted to invite you to a UMA Talks event centered on new fabrication methods for architectural and structural design.

Join us for an insightful event featuring Manja van de Worp and Gabriella Rossi. Manja, the director of YIP Structural Engineering London, will share her expertise in structural geometry, fabrication, and innovative material oppurtunities for the construction industry. Gabriella, a postdoctoral fellow at the Royal Danish Academy, will discuss her research on Machine Learning in architecture, focusing on complex material behavior and design performance. This event is a great opportunity to discuss advances in fabrication strategies, material innovation, and computational design.

About the lecturers:

Manja van de Worp is the director of YIP Structural Engineering London, holding master’s degrees in architecture, Structural Engineering and in Emergent Technologies and Design. She is a structural engineer with 15 years professional experience in the Construction Industry focusing on Structure Geometry and Fabrication, while teaching at the RCA, Architectural Association & IAAC. She has worked for Arup in London in the Advanced Geometry Unit and at the Advanced Technology and Research group in ARUP, designing structures with a complex geometry and moveable structures. Her firm also focuses on structural product design and research-based projects, looking at innovative ways to use timber and 3d printing techniques.

Gabriella Rossi is a (post)doctoral researcher at CITA, Royal Danish Academy. Her research focuses on Machine Learning as an emerging modelling paradigm, and how it can change architectural practice, with focus on architectural datasets, harvested or simulated, and potential applications for complex material behaviour and design performance. She has experience with developing novel fabrication methods for complex geometries and non-standard materials, such as biopolymer composites. She teaches the master programme Computation In Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy, and the AI and Architecture module at the MaCAD programme of the IaaC, and has guest taught internationally at University of Technology of Syndey, Harvard GSD and UPenn. She is a member of the Danish Association of Architects.

The event is moderated by Elena Vazquez Peña, Associate Professor at Umeå School of Architecture.

About UMA Talks:

The UMA Talks are a free and accessible series of events. The series is devoted to advancing architectural discourse from both an international perspective and local perspective, and strives to enable the public, students, teachers, and researchers both within architecture and from other fields to get insight to and participate in the educational activities and academic research taking place at Umeå School of Architecture. Theorist, practitioners, artists, and other relevant guests are invited to speak or to participate in roundtable conversations or similar formats. Read more here
