A global coalition of over 200 civil society organisations from over 60 different countries have called for a ban on the use of biometric surveillance technologies in publicly accessible spaces. This talk will describe the reasoning behind this call for a ban by looking at how a human rights approach understands the harms caused by such uses of these technologies, and how it has led to the 'extreme' approach of calling for a prohibition. This talk will also look at the human rights approach to regulation AI in contrast to certain ethical AI initiatives, and finish by describing the developing conversations around other problematic applications such as emotion recognition.
