The aim of this ongoing PhD-thesis is to examine what conditions digitalization creates within music education in Sweden’s lower secondary schools with a specific focus on its compositional activities. The research questions centers on how digital tools are being used for music composition, how teachers and pupils perceive this use and the pedagogical challenges/possibilities it offers. The theoretical framework for the thesis is based on a media ecological perspective. Through this perspective the music subject can be seen as an ecological system on its own, but also connected to a bigger ecological system, such as the school system, or even to society at large. When new technologies, or species, are introduced to this ecosystem it can be argued that they will change the environment, re-shape thinking, perception, roles and possible actions. The study’s research design is divided into two stages. In the first stage, interviews with fifteen music teachers have been conducted and in the second stage, observations at three different lower secondary schools have been carried out. The expected findings will highlight ways in which the teaching and learning of music composition is changing as the use of digital tools in these activities are becoming more common in Sweden’s lower secondary schools’ music education.
