The Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Steve Humbert-Droz, "Neither a Trait nor an Ability".
Abstract: While the philosophy of emotions is thriving, almost no articles are dedicated to the notion of Emotional Intelligence (EI). In empirical studies, EI is the subject of intense debate regarding its status as a form of intelligence. Unfortunately, the concept of intelligence itself remains vague. Using the ongoing debate between the two primary models of EI in psychology (EI as traits and EI as ability), this paper aims to inquire about the intelligent nature of EI while offering insights into the concept of intelligence itself. Ultimately, I argue for replacing the notion of EI with Emotional Competence; this conceptual shift implies a fundamental change in how psychologists should approach "EI." I conclude by proposing a few outcomes on the features that any kind of intelligence should meet or dismiss.
