The Social Life of Unsustainable Mass Consumption

You are warmly invited to a seminar with Magnus Boström, Örebro University.

Abstract
The book applies sociological and social-psychological theory and research to explain unsustainable volumes of consumption. It contributes to our understanding of mass and excess consumption by a systematic focus on the social embeddedness of consumption. Departing from the concept of social life, it shows how consumption is deeply part of our identities, desires, social relations, interactions, everyday rituals, belonging, status comparison, norms and sense of normality. How the common experience of hurriedness in modern social life drive consumption is another important theme. While focusing on social mechanism of continual mass and excess consumption, the book also offers ideas how to induce a positive spiral of transformative lifestyle change.

The book further elaborates on theories and discussion present in this open access article: Boström, Magnus 2020. The social life of mass and excess consumption. Environmental sociology. 6(3):268-278. OA: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23251042.2020.1755001
