Norm critique as concept is at its core an oxymoron, i.e., a term in contradiction. Norms designate the normal, the taken for granted, and hegemony. Critique denotes questioning what is considered normal, common sense, and dominant structures. Hence, it seems worth exploring and discussing how critique spells out in, with and of norm critique. In other words, what forms of critique are at play in current practices of norm critique? What kind of critical perspectives are afforded by norm critique? What critiques of norm critique can be raised and with what theoretical implications?

The Shifting Grounds Research network has invited active norm critical scholars to read, comment and discuss the five articles presented in the themed issue on critique in, with and of norm critique published in Dansk pædagogisk Tidsskrift October 2024. The themed issue was edited by Tekla Canger and Marta Padovan-Özdemir. All articles are free to download here: https://dpt.dk/temanumre/2024-3/

The research seminar refrains from traditional presentations. Instead, we have made room for the invited discussants to comment and discuss the five articles, respectively.

Associate Professor, Jacob Graack-Larsen will comment and discuss Lotta Björkman’s essay, Det normkritiska perspektivets utveckling i Sverige - En betraktelse av ett skeende och reflektioner kring möjligheter

Associate Professor, Ph.D., Helena Hill will comment and discuss Pia Rauff Krøyer & Pernille Lykke-Buch Jensen’s article, Fritidspædagogiske erkendelser under normkritiske analyseværksteder – en immanent kritik

Assistant Professor, Ph.D. Katrine Scott will comment and discuss Marta Padovan-Özdemir’s article, Utopi i normkritisk pædagogisk - Længselsfuld, hjemsøgt og uforløst

Professor, Niclas Månsson will comment and discuss Simon Nørgaard Iversen’s article, Normkritik i krydsfeltet mellem affirmativ og negativ kritik – Skitsering af en dialektisk normkritik

Associate Professor, Ph.D. Jan Thorhauge Frederiksen will comment and discuss Lovise Haj Brade’s review essay, For en rosa-rød selv- og systemkritisk normkritik

The articles are in Danish and Swedish, and the seminar will be held in English.

Shifting Grounds

Shifting Grounds brings Nordic/international scholars of norm criticality together to advance the theoretical framework and concepts for thinking and practising norm criticality in academic work across disciplines. Our common aim and interest is to, through theoretical inquiry, provide a new language and ground for addressing social injustices.
