The Research Seminar Series in Archaeology and Environmental archaeology invites you to a seminar with Jakub Niewisiewicz, "From Alpine Valleys to Arctic Lands: Human Mobility in Prehistoric Europe".
Abstract: Two distinct archaeological contexts propose an overview of human activity and movement during prehistory. The first part focuses on the Saint Leonard facies of the Cortaillod culture in the Valais canton, Switzerland, with a presentation of a study of the Carrières MTA archaeological site. The polished jade artifacts from this site provide valuable insights into raw material acquisition and exchange networks, revealing patterns of Neolithic population mobility. The second part introduces a PhD project aiming to investigate Mesolithic mobility strategies and settlement patterns in northern Sweden. With the recent development of AI-fueled algorithms and the multiplication of computing power, it is henceforth possible to process vast amounts of data, enabling large-scale, complex analyses.
By juxtaposing alpine and northern contexts, we can highlight common threads in human responses to environmental challenges, resource management, and the development of cultural landscapes.
In other words, I’ll attempt to present you briefly my master thesis results, and how it led me to conceiving the phd project (that I’ll also briefly present!). On paper it seemed like a coherent idea, and also it allows me not to be that stressed about the timing.
