IceLab affiliate Eric Capo, Assistant professor at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, will give a talk in IceLab titled 'Unraveling microbial diversity in Swedish Arctic lakes'' on May 13th at 14:00, in IceLab and through Zoom.
The Capo lab is developing to develop a groundbreaking method to obtain environmental DNA from lake water samples using a waterproof drone outfitted with a water sampler as well as oxygen and temperature sensors. This will allow for the large-scale analysis of a landscape with minimal effort, compared to carrying boats to remote areas. As pilot studies, we aim to sample spatially Kassjön lakes in May 2025 and > 90 lakes near Abisko (West of Torbeträsk). During this talk, Eric will discuss about what such type of sampling can provide better view on microbial diversity and the research questions that could be answered with this approach. expect this pilot study to provide invaluable background for in-depth studies of the impact of ongoing human-driven environmental changes on lake microbial services.
