Past, Present and Future Studies on the History of Politics and Mass Media
Betto van Waarden
How can we research the historical relationship between politics and mass media using digital sources and methods? Based on his past, present, and future research projects, historian Betto van Waarden will explore this question. He will talk about: (1) measuring media attention for politicians in the attention economy of the nineteenth-century mass press; (2) discerning differences in twentieth-century views on broadcasting parliament among different groups of parliamentarians by applying structural collocation analysis to parliamentary proceedings; and (3) researching how notions of the past and future of technology informed parliamentarians’ regulation of television by developing a method of temporal sentiment analysis.
