Abstract This #frAIday talk will focus on methods and applications of art practice and artistic research in the context of generative AI. It will address strategies for navigating the prevailing hype and doom surrounding AI, emphasizing practical and speculative approaches that enable artists to leverage this technology without being consumed by it. There will be discussion about image and video production through open-source methods, a presentation of earlier artworks incorporating legacy AI technologies, and insights into Daniel Shanken’s current exhibition, The Pits, on view at Chemist Gallery in London until December 4th. The talk will also explore the integral role of generative AI in the exhibition’s creation and thematic framework.
Daniel Shanken completed his BFA in Fine Art Media at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2006, MFA in Art Practice at Goldsmiths University of London in 2012, and his PhD in contemporary art practice in 2023. Before starting as an Assistant Professor at AVA (HKBU) in 2019, he worked as an Art Practice Tutor at Goldsmiths University London, and a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art London.
