Digital Impact North, the AI Policy Lab at Umeå University and the Enaibler project invite to a seminar to discuss the possibility of initiating a process to draw up a regional action plan in order to promote the development and use of AI.

Background

Artificial intelligence has the potential to fundamentally change the way we live, work and interact with the world around us and thus also the ability to transform societies and economies. In Sweden, various AI initiatives have already begun such as the AI Sweden. Also, the European AI office is seeking to become the single European AI governance system as well as foster innovation, collaboration, and development in the field of AI. Today, several European regions are trying to act proactively in designing AI-oriented collaboration platforms with the aim of maximizing benefits and promoting innovation and economic growth. An example of such an AI ecosystem is the Basque AI Center BAIC, which has been in operation since 2021.

The reason for the interest in collaboration platforms and ecosystems based on a private-public partnership is that the actors can share resources, knowledge and data that can lead to synergies that can drive innovation and adoption of AI within the region. The challenges are complex, affecting both technology development and regulatory aspects such as the AI Act will have consequences for producers and consumers of AI applications.

In this workshop, we therefore want to take the opportunity to discuss a possible need to initiate a process to prepare a regional action plan to establish a so-called AI ecosystem (or the equivalent of an EU AI Fabric) as well as write an AI policy report for local and national policy makers.
