Current advances in marine microbial ecology – zooming in on bacterial population dynamics
Professor Jarone Pinhassi, Linnéuniversitetet
Since my early research, I have kept an interest in identifying population dynamics in marine bacterioplankton and how they are influenced by environmental forcing. This includes time scales of dynamics ranging from days to months to years.
Thanks to the development of genetic analyses methods on both the technological side (laboratory protocols and sequencing methods) and the bioinformatics side, we can now also ask what molecular mechanisms and metabolisms that underlie the temporal dynamics. And thus to ask what do individual populations actually do that make the regulate global biogeochemical cycles? My presentation will give some teasers on these subjects from the Baltic Sea and other seas.
