Contents

The concept “fundamental values” and “sustainable development” are analyzed and problemetized from the perspective of a teacher. Issues about ethics in fostering and teaching are studied, as well as teachers work from a power- and democracy perspective. The concept sustainable development is studied from ecological, economic and social perspectives. The teacher’s assignment to work in a multicultural society and school raises questions about social background, gender, ethnicity and equal treatment and how these issues influence teaching and learning.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course students should be able to: - analyze and discuss the concepts fundamental values and sustainable development in relation to the teacher assignment - give examples, explain and discuss the connections between the social, economic and ecological dimensions concerning sustainable development - discuss and analyze questions from social science and natural science perspectives - account for some ethical theories and concepts and put these in relation to public mission of the teacher and the school - discuss and give examples of the concept democratic fostering from perspectives of social background, gender, ethnicity and equal treatment - account for the main lines in international and national agreements on human rights and sustainable development.

Form of instruction

The forms of study are lectures, seminars and compulsory exercises.

Examination modes

To pass the whole course it is required that all compulsory parts are passed. The course work is examined at the ordinary examinaion or re-examined at a later occasion during the same semester. An opportunity to re-examine the course work is normally given in examination or re-examined at a later occasion the following semester provided the student has requested it. After that a student with a fail is advised to participate in the next ordinary examination. Re-examinations based on the same curriculum are guaranteed within the two years of the first registration on the course. A student has the right to change examiner for a course based on a written request to the head of department after two fails on the same course or a part of the course.
