The aim of the course is to provide students with a broad understanding of molecular NMR spectroscopy with focus on novel Solid State NMR, Diffusion-NMR and Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Microscopy techniques as used in life science and industry. Applications are presented, ranging from protein aggregation related to diseases, biological membranes and their functional receptor proteins, to new materials as developed in technical, chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Basic understanding of NMR-imaging techniques will be given with special focus on medical diagnosis via MRI, and non-destructive imaging microscopy in industry. The course will be complemented by a basic presentation of quantum theory necessary to describe various NMR phenomena. Students will use “state of the art” NMR equipment to perform their own studies on systems related to life and material science.

Required Knowledge

Biophysical Chemistry, Spectroscopy (7.5 ECTS, 5KE038), or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
