Contents

Relationships between molecular properties and three-dimensional structure of organic compounds are discussed. Methods for synthesis of, for example, biologically interesting substances such as pharmacologically active compounds are based on mechanisms of organic reactions. Reaction mechanisms also form the basis for explaining the formation of various products in organic reactions, and for creating strategies that maximize the yield of target compound and minimizes byproducts. The lab section provides training of practical skills in planning, performing and evaluation of experiments. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are employed to resolve the structures of organic molecules.

Required Knowledge

Fundamentals of Chemistry (15 ECTS, 5KE080), or the equivlent. English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Academic Training –minimum score 5.0 with no individual score below 4.5 (Tests taken before January 2005 not admissible or TOEFL – minimum score 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE, Alternatively 173 on computer based test with iBT61 is also required as well as basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency if the course in taught in Swedish.
