Contents

The course gives the student the opportunity to independently and in groups communicate their knowledge and skills, and reflect on their level of competence in relation to a future profession as an industrial designer. Students will further develop and refine their design process through project work linked to contemporary design problems. During project work, opportunities are given for deeper reflections both on the student’s own process and also linked to the collaboration partners interests and the users needs and preferences.

Design process 3, 7.5 credits
1.    Project planning, 3 credits
2.    Sketching, 1.5 credits
3.    Design communication 3, 3 credits

In this course, the student should independently identify a contemporary design problems and write a project description including background, target group and method description, competitive overview, time and work planning and a budget. The design problem should be formulated based on the needs and visions of an identified partner organization or authority.

The students should deepen their skills to work with different materials and techniques to produce sketches, for example by means of visualization software. The students will, for example, deepen their skills to express themselves with a personal visual langage and individual attitude.

The students will further develop their individual portfolio and transfer it to different relevant media such as the Web. The work includes reflection on design and professional skills in a contemporary perspective.

Storytelling, 3 credits
During this course, the student should create a storyboard that describes the vision and the narrative of a concept idea or earlier completed project. The student will be aquainted with storytelling as a creative tool, but primarily as a communication and argumentative presentation technique.

Design and theory 3, 3 credits
In this course, the students are introduced the basics in the field of design theory. The goal is for students to become familiar with a theoretical approach in relation to their future work and design. The student will also form a theoretical and conceptual understanding of design theory. The student must train themselves to a reflective approach to discuss, for example, design theory with a focus on industrial design and related fields. During the course, students should be given the opportunity to develop their skills and experience to discuss and present theoretical issues.

During this course, the students should receive and orient themselves in the basic conditions for modern marketing based on a design development perspective. The student will also become familiar with and understand financial concepts and finance from a design development perspective.

Design project 3, 7,5 credits
Hot Team - innovation project management
In this course, the students will carry out a design project in interdisciplinary teams with focus on project management. The module is crossdisciplinary with students from different cycles, departments and programmes. The project application is to a large degree dealing with "Design Thinking" and current innovation research. The goal is for students to be trained to work in interdisciplinary teams and work with a focus on collaboration and innovation issues. The students will through practical application perform an application projects in cooperation with external company, organization or authority. The students will reflect on and apply group mechanisms and individual factors that influence the level of innovation for themselves and for the team as well as reflect on the differences between project work and interdisciplinary team work. During this course section, each team set up a studio space for their work.

Design as experience 3, 9 credits
The goal is to enable students to deepen their knowledge and skills to work with contemporary issues in projects and focusing on color, form and semantics as an experience.
The course includes elements to work in teams, to identify a professional role and to deepen their expertise in working with complex design problems with varying and current design perspectives. The students are given opportunities to partially independently deepen their ability to work methodically with design-related problems in a realistic context. The students collaborate with outside persons from industry, authorities or municipality but also with expertise in areas such as marketing and product development.
The course is conducted as a design project, with the exploration grounded in form, semantics and color as a combined and complex experience. Tutoring is done with active industrial designers from industry. The students work in project form with a contemporary complex design problems with different design approaches such as a design manual for a brand and a range of products.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Independently identify a contemporary design problem and plan to work with external partners implement a project, in relation to society, the market and the target groups and development.
  • Perform presentation sketches with a personal developed visual language and able to handle digital sketching techniques.
  • Finalize and present their individual portfolio that represents the knowledge and skills of the student.
  • Critically reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of storytelling as presentation techniques and creative process.
  • Reflect a practical philosophical approach in relation to the future profession, society ongoing changes with a focus on industrial design and related fields and to.
  • Analyze and discuss theoretical issues in today's society from a design perspective
  • Plan, implement and reflect on an innovative design projects in a multidisciplinary team and apply and analyze different individual skills and group dynamic processes in order to promote the integration and interaction of a multidisciplinary team work.
  • Perform brand and shape analysis of a company and its product portfolio to compile a design manual.

Required Knowledge

60 ECTS in Industrial design and portfolio

Form of instruction

The course consists of lectures, seminars and practical training with teacher-led instruction, indvidual or in group.

Examination modes

Course sections are assessed in verbal, written, and visual format.
When all course sections have been completed, the gradings for the sections will be compiled. To be able to pass the course, all course sections must be completed.

For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
