Contents

The course aims to enable students to use prior knowledge, skills and competence to further develop their design tools such as visualization, form sensibility and communication skills. In project work, the student gets the opportunity to deepen both its ability to combine the two and three-dimensional work, team collaboration and visualization.

Design communication 2, 4.5 credits
The students will further develop their individual portfolio and transfer it to different relevant media. The work includes reflection on design and professional skills in a contemporary perspective.

Design as experience 2, 7.5 credits
1.    Modelling in clay, 1.5 credits
2.    Form studies, 4.5 credits
3.    Sketching techniques, 1.5 credits

The goal is that students practice and deepen their knowledge to solve form problems in a systematic way on the basis of a pre-established objective. The course consists of a design project that assumes a limited form analysis of an existing product and brand. The student will rework it with two-dimensional sketches and drawings to be followed by the development of a 3-dimensional shape proposals with a physical scale model in clay. The student should, based on a completed analysis and reflection, communicate the form concepts both verbally and in writing.

Design and theory 2, 4.5 credits
In this course, students should be familiar with the anatomy of muscular structures and physical conditions of work, the body's limitations and human cognitive conditions for the manipulation of products and services. The students are introduced to critical analysis and reasoning skills as a method to communicate and present design proposals.

Design project 2, 6 credits
Hot Team - innovation project
In this course, the students will carry out a design project in interdisciplinary teams. The module is crossdisciplinary with students from different cycles, departments and programmes. The project application is to a large degree dealing with "Design Thinking" and current innovation research. The goal is for students to be trained to work in interdisciplinary teams and work with a focus on ergonomics and innovation issues. The students will through practical application perform an application projects in cooperation with external company, organization or authority. The students will reflect on and apply group mechanisms and individual factors that influence the level of innovation for themselves and for the team as well as reflect on the differences between project work and interdisciplinary team work. During this course section, each team set up a studio space for their work.

Design manufacturing and new technologies 2, 6 credits
1.    Manufacturing and sustainability, 3 credits
2.    New technologies, 3 credits

The course provides an overview of material and production techniques in order for the student to be able to propose alternative ways of industrial production of a product. The student will also be able to form a view on the economic conditions that are associated with different production methods and new technology.

Design presentation 2, 1.5 credits
The goal for this course is for the students to be trained in basic conditions for work with digital visualization, CAID. The students will, by working with design exercises, train themselves to work with a design process that is based on a pre-formulated goal

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Develop an individual portfolio that represents the knowledge and skills of the students through relevant media and reflect on the portfolio in a contemporary design perspective.
  • Exemplify model material different conditions and constraints for the model creation in applied 2-dimensional visual materials for 3-dimensional shape production, where the work shape is linked to a brand.
  • Explain some basic conditions for cognitive abilities in interaction at the manipulation of products and services and exemplify the different theories, concepts and methods in the field of human, machine and service.
  • Reflect on their own role and professional identity on the basis of cooperation in innovative interdisciplinary teams.
  • Critically analyze their own knowledge of the design process and reflect on the experiences of real-life work experience with industrial focus.
  • Compare and evaluate various alternative ways to industrially produce a product based in part on the economic conditions of the different manufacturing methods and illustrate some tools for environmental work, focusing on product development.
  • Explain the work process and planning to visualize with the help of computer technology and apply basic knowledge in the chosen software to visualize products in the environment.

Required Knowledge

60 ECTS in Industrial design and portfolio

Form of instruction

The course consists of lectures, seminars and practical training with teacher-led instruction, indvidual or in group.

Examination modes

Course sections are assessed in verbal, written, and visual format.
When all course sections have been completed, the gradings for the sections will be compiled. To be able to pass the course, all course sections must be completed.
The grades Pass (G) or Fail (U) are awarded for each course section, and for the course as a whole.

For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
