Contents

The overall purpose is to investigate alternative ways of visualising screen-based information and provide skills to develop software prototypes. The course has two parts:

1. Development of software prototypes II, 3 credits
2. Multiple Layers in GUI design, 4.5 credits

Course Part 1: Development of software prototypes II , 3 credits
This step is a continuation of the previous step development of software prototypes I ( in 5ID075 Graphic Design 1) with continued training in the computer program Flash or equivalent.

Course Part 2: Multiple Layers in GUI design, 4.5 credits
This course aims to explore alternative ways of visualising screen-based information that departs from the traditional WIMP format. This format is still the most dominant interface type in both desktop and portable equipment despite many well-known drawbacks and limitations. Students are given the task of designing an interface using about 15 layers of information in order to distinguish different features or condition. All bearings are to be viewed simultaneously. Animation can also be used. Students are encouraged to find inspiration in graphic design traditions, poster design, everyday prints, maps and TV graphics.

Explanation: In humans HCI WIMP stands for "window, icon, menu, pointing device" and denotes a type of interaction that use these ingredients. The term was coined by M. Wilberts in 1980 and was often used for a time as a rough synonym for graphical user interfaces. WIMP interaction was developed at Xerox PARC (developed in 1973) and popularised by the Macintosh in 1984 (van Dam, 1997).

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to visually explore graphic design.
  • Use typography, graphic design and animation in the design of a complex layered interface.
  • Demonstrate experience in and knowledge of various graphic design traditions such as poster design, everyday graphics, information design and television graphics.
  • Demonstrate experience in and knowledge of different historical approaches in the development of graphic design.
  • Show further developed skills in animation of an interface using a set of relevant softwares such as Flash.
  • Show further developed skills in the use of relevant software for processing images, graphic design and illustrations.
  • Use the basics of 3D modelling using a relevant set of software.
  • Use technology for rapid prototype development.

Required Knowledge

Univ: In order to be admitted to the course, students must have completed a BA in Industrial Design or the equivalent as well as all previous master courses in the Interaction Design (IxD) program at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and no individual score below 5.5. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum score of 575 and a minimum TWE score of 4.5). TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum score of 90 and a minimum score of 20 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The course consists of lectures and practical training with teacher-led instruction. Skilled professional designers as well as teachers from Umeå Institute of Design works as teachers. All course modules are compulsory.

Examination modes

Examination is in the form of presentations of projects and tasks. To pass the course, students must have completed all procedures and tasks successfully. The ratings given are either Pass (G) or fail (U) for each task and course moment, as well as the course as a whole.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english)  and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
