The course is discontinued

Swedish name: Nordliga akvatiska system

This syllabus is valid: 2013-04-08 and until further notice

Course code: 5GV014

Credit points: 15

Education level: Second cycle

Main Field of Study and progress level: Earth Science/Physical Geography: Second cycle, has only first-cycle course/s as entry requirements

Grading scale: Three-grade scale

Responsible department: Department of Ecology and Environmental Science

Contents

The course examines presence and turn over of inorganic substances, dissolved organic materials, nutrients and environmental pollutants in natural freshwater ecosystems. Special emphasizes are placed on elementary dynamics and affects of different anthropogenic activities on the biogeochemistry of northern aquatic ecosystems. The course contains an excursion visiting different catchments where the aim is to study and assess how both natural and anthropogenic factors and processes affect aquatic ecosystems.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Describe and analyze the occurrence and metabolism of inorganic substances, dissolved organic matter, nutrients, and contaminants in northern aquatic systems,
- Apply methods for collecting, processing and interpretation of water chemistry data,
- Actively contribute with qualified scientific observations at the seminar discussions,
- With a high degree of independence obtain, collate, analyze, and perform written and oral presentations of scientific literature on the subject.

Required Knowledge

120 ECTS credits including 60 ECTS credits earth science/physical geography, or 60 ECTS credits in biology, chemistry or environmental science and 30 ECTS credits in earth science/physical geography, or equivalent knowledge. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The tuition consists of lectures, seminars, smaller projects, presentations and field trips. Seminars, presentations, smaller projects and field trips are required. The main part of the course consists of topics and lectures dealing northern aquatic systems biogeochemistry. Each theme includes studies involving an introductory lecture, followed by literature studies and final seminar presentations. In parallel with thematic teaching, laboratory experiments are conducted in which hydrological and water chemistry data are processed and interpreted, and an individual assignment in which students with a high degree of independence, compiles, analyzes and in writing and orally present the scientific literature on the subject.

Examination modes

Examination of the course is in the form of oral and written presentations of a seminar tasts, smaller projects project, an individual assignment and an exam. The grades on the seminar tasks and the smaller projects are Failed or Passed, the grades on the individual assignment and the exam are Failed, Passed and Passed with distinction. The grades on the course as a whole, are Failed, Passed and Passed with distinction. A student that has performed two test for a course or part of a course without getting the grade passed, has the right to get a new examiner appointed, if there are no particular reasons against it (HF 6 chapter 22§). The request for a new examiner is sent to the prefect for the department of ecology and environmental science. A student who has achieved a passed grade on an examination may not retake this examination in order to attempt to achieve a higher grade. To pass the whole course, all tests must be passed and compulsory parts performed. The grade on the course is a combined assessment of all the different parts of the examinations and is awarded when all compulsory parts are performed.
