Contents
The course, from a systemic perspective, account for major components of the Internet of Things devices. The course studies simple sensor technology for gathering information from the environment, as well as how it communicates to physical servers and cloud services. The course also deals with how things, services and information are designed to create value connected to the Internet and Things and its possibilities. The course is divided into two parts (modules): Laboratory part, 4 ECTS and Theoretical part, 3.5 ECTS.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, students shall be able to: Knowledge and understanding: * Describe the various components of Internet of Things systems, * Explain the function of different hardware and sensors for Embedded System, * Describe and explain the function of different components of a cloud computing service, * Make an oral and a written presentation of new trends and technologies for big data analytics, Competence and skills: * Using sensor nodes to collect information from environment, * Design and setup of a server/client solution for communication and sharing of data, * Design interactions in multisensory area, Judgement and approach: * Evaluate and analyse IOT applications from user experience view, * Analyse the product/service security issues.
Form of instruction
The teaching is conducted in form of lectures and group tutorials as well as supervision during laboratory work, group work and project work. The course is conducted on campus and by 50% tempo. Lectures and Labs use both English and Swedish. Teaching materials in the form of lectures, example codes and assignments are available through the course's learning platform. The course consists of a theoretical and an experimental part as main, with small parts of seminar and project.
Examination modes
The examination is based on:
Module 1 (Laboratory part): Three lab reports which each are assessed with either Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG). To get a (G) the report should be of high quality. To get a (VG) the report should be of very high quality. Assessment criteria for (G) and (VG) are cleared in the instructions. Based on the overall assessment of the lab reports, Module 1 is graded with either Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG). To get the grade (G), three reports need to be assessed with at least (G). To get the grade (VG) at least two of the reports need to be assessed with (VG).
Module 2 (Theory part): Two written seminar reports and an oral presentation of the project along with a written report. The seminar reports are assessed with either Fail (U) or Pass (G). The project is assessed with either Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG). Assessment criteria for (G) and (VG) are cleared in the instructions. Based on the overall assessment of the seminar reports and the project, Module 2 is graded with either Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG). To get the grade (G) both the seminars and the project should be assessed with (G). To get a (VG) the seminars should be assessed with (G) and the project should be assessed with (VG).
Entire course: On the course as a whole, the grades given are Fail (U), Pass (3) or Pass with Mark (4), or Pass with Distinction (5). In order to pass the course completely all mandatory parts must be passed as well. To get the course grade (3) both Module 1 and Module 2 should have the grade (G). To get the grade (4), in addition the grade (VG) either in Module 1 or Module 2 is required. To get the grade (5) the grade (VG) both in Module 1 and 2 is required. For all students who do not pass the regular examination, there are additional opportunities to do the examination. A student who has taken two tests for a course or segment of a course, without passing, has the right to have another examiner appointed unless there exist special reasons (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 6, section 22). Requests for new examiners are made to the head of the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics.
TRANSFER OF CREDITS Transfer of credits is considered individually (see the University Code of Rules and regulations for transfer of credits). This course may not be used towards a degree, in completely or in part, simultaneously with another course of similar content. If in doubt, consult the student counsellors at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics.
