During the course, the student applies his previously acquired knowledge in the subject of biology or geoscience practically at a company, public administration, organization, or institution that conducts activities that correspond to the student's education. The internship is done under supervision and the goal is to give the student supplementary subject knowledge for further studies and future professional activities, as well as knowledge of how work is organized and conducted in a workplace.
Expected learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should for the grade "Pass" (G) be able to:
ELO 1. Explain how work related to the subject is organized and carried out professionally at the internship. ELO 2. Apply subject knowledge to work within the subject area. ELO 3. Reflect on how well tasks and methods during the internship are connected to scientific, societal and international aspects. ELO 4. Reflect on the internship's sustainability work and work environment aspects focusing on gender equality and equal treatment. ELO 5. Reflect on ethical issues within the framework of practice. ELO 6. Reflect on own learning, including identifying additional knowledge needs.
Form of instruction
The course includes full-time internship for about 10 weeks and is placed at a workplace that carries out activities that correspond to the student's education. It is mainly the student's own responsibility to obtain a suitable internship. Before the work begins, the internship and the supervisor at the internship must be approved by the course supervisor/examiner. The layout of the internship period is planned by the supervisor at the internship site in consultation with the student. During the internship, the student should continuously document work tasks and experiences, which constitute support for the examining report that is written at the end of the internship. The written report should contain a description of the organization of the workplace and the work performed during the internship, as well as a reflection on the aspects mentioned in the expected learning outcomes. The more organizational aspects (ELO 3-5) may be relevant to the internship in various degree and this may be part of the reflection. Documents produced during the internship period can be attached to the report. After the end of the internship period, the supervisor at the internship must certify that the student completed the internship satisfactorily. Participation in the workplace during the internship period and a written internship report are mandatory.
Examination modes
The examination takes place through a written report where, based on the course's expected study results, the student reports on and reflects on the internship period. The supervisor's statement is a basis for assessing the grade. The entire course is graded either Pass (G) or Fail (U). For the grade pass, it is required that all ELOs for the grade Passed have been met and that the student has completed the internship full-time during the entire internship period. If the absence from the internship exceeds one working week, an individual assessment is made regarding the need for supplements to achieve a pass on the course. Students who fail an exam have the right to take a new exam. A student who has passed two tests for a course or part of a course without a passing result has the right to have another examiner appointed unless there are special reasons against it (HF chapter 6, § 22). The request for a new examiner is made to the head of the Department of Ecology & Environmental Science (EMG).
Crediting Students have the right to have their previous education or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in the profession tested whether it can be credited for the corresponding course at Umeå University. Application for credit is submitted to the Student Centre / Examinations. For more information on credit transfer available on Umeå University's student web, www.student.umu.se, and the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 6). A refusal of accreditation may be appealed against (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 12) to the University Appeals Board. This applies to the whole as well as part of the application if accreditation is refused.
