Contents

The course deepens the knowledge in the field of Biomedical engineering and provides training in planning, implementing and both oral and written presentation of an independent project. The student must critically examine and present the results through an oral presentation and a written report in the format of the scientific essay. The project involves normal work in an environment with professional hospital engineers and other healthcare personnel and aims at the same time to strengthen the future professional role. The project can also be carried out at a company or authority with a close connection to the area.

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

The student must be able to

  •      Show in-depth knowledge in the chosen project area
  •      Be able to explain the scientific basis of the question and the scientific methods of the project work
  •      Demonstrate an understanding of how research data is handled and stored securely

Skills and Abilities:

The student must be able to

  •      Write a project plan in English, which addresses a defined scientific question through adequate study design and research methodology
  •      Independently identify relevant sources of information, perform information searches, evaluate the relevance of the information
  •      Independently apply skills in experimental design and method in the planning and execution of a scientific work
  •      Summarize the work in the form of a scientific essay in English
  •      Verbally convey, discuss and defend the work for an interdisciplinary target group

Evaluation ability and approach:

The student must be able to

  •      Systematically evaluate and critically review the work and reflect on how it contributes to the research or development area
  •      Discuss study design and research methodology in the chosen research area, taking into account opportunities and limitations
  •      Reflect on societal and ethical aspects that are relevant to the work carried out
  •      Reflect on the applicability of the results, as well as on remaining questions

Required Knowledge

University: a total of 240 credits, of which 30 credits in Biomedical engineering advanced level. English A/6 and Swedish for basic eligibility for university studies if the training is given in Swedish.

Form of instruction

Teaching is conducted in the form of individual supervision. If the project is carried out outside the university, a supervisor at the university must be appointed. The supervisor must be able to offer regular contact throughout the work. An examiner at the department provides support in the planning and execution of the work. The work must include 20 weeks of full-time work. The student must be given the necessary resources required to be able to plan and execute the project within this time frame. The language of instruction is Swedish or English.

Examination modes

The course is presented in the form of an individual scientific essay and an oral presentation. The essay must be linguistically and stylistically well-developed and follow the scientific IMRaD format (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion).

A student who has received a passing result on an exam may not take a new exam.

The examiner can decide on deviations from the examination form of the syllabus. Individual adaptation of the form of examination must be considered based on the student's needs. The form of examination is adapted within the framework of the curriculum's expected study results. Students who need an adapted examination must request adaptation from the department responsible for the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on an adapted examination, which is then notified to the student.

A student who has passed two tests for a course or part of a course without a passing result has the right to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons against it (HF ch. 6 § 22). The request for a new examiner is made to the head of the Department of Radiation Sciences. For more information, see Rules for grades and examinations at basic and advanced level, dnr: FS 1.1-574-22.

Other regulations

In the event that the course plan ceases to apply or undergoes major changes, students are guaranteed at least three exam opportunities (including regular exam opportunities) according to the regulations in the course plan in which the student was originally course registered for a maximum of two years from the time the previous course plan ceased to apply.
