Contents
The course deepens and broadens the students' knowledge and skills in medical physics / biomedical engineering by conducting a project in medical imaging at Umeå university hospital. The projects are related to needs from clinical work or research projects in medical imaging (ultrasound, MRI, PET, etc). The projects are conducted by a group of students and the results are presented in a written report and by an oral presentation at a clinical department.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, students are able to:
Knowledge and understanding
Describe how the medical imaging system, related to the project, works.
Describe image and signal analysis methods to analyse/study physiological phenomena within the application of the project.
Describe basic concepts and terminology in medical imaging with relevance to the project.
Competence and skills
Demonstrate oral and written ability of presenting and discussing the results and conclusions of the project with persons not working in the project.
Demonstrate ability of mastering work in the project form.
Judgement and approach
Demonstrate ability to communicate and cooperate with the project members.
Reflect over and evaluate their contribution to the project.
Demonstrate ability to make relevant scientific judgements within the frame of the project.
Demonstrate ability to identify and take responsibility to gather further knowledge for the progression of the project and its conductance.
Required Knowledge
At least 120 hp completed in a three-year engineering education, or in one of the main areas of computer science, electronics, physics, mathematics or mathematical statistics, which must include Linear Algebra 7.5 HP and Statistics for Technical Physicists 6 HP as well as Programming Technology with C and Matlab 7.5 HP or equivalent. English A/6 and Swedish for basic eligibility for university studies if the course is given in Swedish.
Form of instruction
The teaching form is project based, according to an established project model. A supervisor at the institution will support and help the students in their planning and work. The course is given in English if required by any participating student. The course can take place in English.
Examination modes
Examination takes place in groups where individual assessment can take place through written and oral presentation of the project work. Only the grades Fail (U) or Pass (G) are given on the written and oral reports. The entire course is graded either Fail (U) or Pass (G). In order to pass the entire course, all tests and mandatory modules must be passed. The grade constitutes a summary assessment of the results of the various parts of the examination and is only assigned when all mandatory modules have been approved.
A student who has received a passing result on an exam may not take a new exam.
The examiner can decide on deviations from the examination form of the syllabus. Individual adaptation of the form of examination must be considered based on the student's needs. The form of the examination is adapted within the framework of the curriculum's expected study results. A student who needs an adapted examination, and who has received a decision on the right to support from the coordinator for students with disabilities at the Student Centre, must request adaptation from the department responsible for the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on an adapted examination, which is then notified to the student.
Other regulations
In the event that the course expires or major changes are introduced, the students are assured at least three occasions of examination (including regular examination) as prescribed in the syllabus to the course that the student originally registered in over a period of a maximum of two years from the previous syllabus expired.
