Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be familiar with the laws and regulations governing dental hygienists in Sweden and be able to put that knowledge in relation to the regulations of their native country. Furthermore, the student should be able to apply and integrate the theoretical knowledge regarding full treatment of patients within the competence of a Swedish dental hygienist.

Required Knowledge

Incoming exchange student, admitted to a Dental Hygienist programme, and who has completed and passed at least 2/3 of their education at their home university.

Form of instruction

Instruction comprises mainly observing patient treatment sessions and treating patients. Attendance is compulsory for all course items involving the treatment of patients.
The course is given in Swedish. If needed, supervision in English can be given during the observation of patient treatment sessions and when treating patients. Patient records are written in Swedish with the help of the supervisor.

Examination modes

Examination will be based partly on the student’s participation and attendance at patient treatment sessions and partly on an oral presentation. To gain a pass (G - Godkänd), the student must have attended at least 80% of the patient treatment sessions and given a successful oral presentation on the treatment of a patient.

After consultation with the supervisor concerned, the examiner has the authority to fail a student during ongoing practice if the student’s knowledge, skills or general approach, separately or in combination, are so deficient that there is a marked risk that the student, during the practice, may damage another person’s physical or mental health. In that case, the student is not allowed to continue the practice and will at that time fail (U – Underkänd) the course in question.
In conjunction with such a decision, the examiner shall draw up an individual development plan in consultation with the student. The development plan shall state the knowledge, skills and general approach the student must acquire in order to resume the practice. In addition, at what point of time a follow-up will take place.  The student is entitled to two follow-ups per year. However, the maximum number of follow-ups is four, unless there are special reasons to be taken into account.
If, at a follow-up, the student demonstrates acquired knowledge, skills and general approach stated in the development plan, the student is admitted to start a new period of practice. The student is only permitted to restart a period of practice once.
