Contents

The course includes an in-depth look at evaluating pain in children of different ages and developmental stages as well as specific instruments for pain assessment. Pharmacological and psychological methods for treatment of acute and chronic pain are included. Aspects of gender, class and ethnicity are highlighted in relation to the course’s content.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student shall: - present strategies for pain evaluation of children in different ages and developmental stages, - describe specific instruments for pain assessment for use in pediatrics, - describe and judge pharmacological and psychological pain treatment methods for procedural pain, acute and chronic pain as well as pain in different illnesses, - discuss and analyze ethnical, regional and international aspects of pain in children as well as aspects of gender and class, - conduct ethical discussions about pain treatment for children.

Required Knowledge

Higher education within nursing or health care comprising at least 180 hp (120 p) or an equivalent foreign degree.

Form of instruction

The course is 7.5 ECTS credits. The course is given in English and is conducted solely via a net-based forum. The studies are characterized by active searching for knowledge, problem solving and reflection. The working methods vary between individual work, work in study groups and lectures.

Examination modes

A three point grading scale is used: fail, pass or pass with distinction. The course assesses students individually in the form of turned-in written assignments. Compulsory sections consist of participation in discussion forums, group assignments and turned-in written assignments. The number of examination opportunities is limited to a total of five. The student who fails two times has the right to request a different examiner from the program committee. In general please refer to the educational programme syllabus for the respective specialist nursing programme. In order to receive a passing grade for the entire course, it is required to pass all tests and compulsory sections. The grade is comprised of a comprehensive evaluation of the results of the examinations’ different parts, and is given when all compulsory sections are passed. Academic credit transfer No general academic credit transfers are applied. Review of whether an earlier education or activity in whole or in part can be accepted for academic credit transfer is decided by the program committee. Before then, an evaluation is made by the teacher who is responsible for the course and who also submits a suggestion for decision.
