This course covers theories of global environmental change and international relations. It includes issues such as global warming, acidification, deforestation, energy, and recycling. To what extent are environmental problems domestic or international in character? Are we all equally affected by them? Causes, effects and policies concerning these problems are discussed with examples from the industrialized countries, both West and East, and from third world countries. How does the structure of the international system impact on our ability to resolve environmental problems? Did the end of the Cold War clear the way for serious attention to global environmental issues? An overview of important international organizations and agreements within the environment arena is presented, including discussion of the environmental movement and its development.
