The course provides the knowledge and skills to plan, design, and conduct scientific studies in the field of psychology. Specifically, it provides both theoretical understanding of, and hands-on skills for, methods for data collection, including observation and interview techniques, construction of questionnaires, and for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. It also presents an overview of analytical methods that are appropriate for different research questions, research designs and methods for data collection. The course provides a broad range of examples of current psychological research to illustrate these perspectives, with respect to designs, methods for data collection, and analytical methods. Depending on the student's educational program, one follows either a cognitive science or a health psychology track.
Expected learning outcomes
After completed course the student should be able to show:
Knowledge and understanding * knowledge about a range of data collection methods, such as observations, interviews, and questionnaires * knowledge about a range of qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods
Skills and ability * conduct or describe steps and procedures involved in qualitative and quantitative data analysis * conduct or describe the steps and procedures involved in systematic reviews and meta-analyses * demonstrate the ability to - in English - communicate knowledge in the present scientific field
Evaluation ability and approach * evaluate one's own performance in practical exercises, with good insight in what critical aspects to consider
