Contents

The aim of this course is to deepen students’ knowledge of GIS. This will be achieved through the use of raster data and related analysis methods. Location analysis, network analysis, and simple spatial modelling will also be covered. The software used in this course includes ArcGIS and SPSS.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to: - understand and describe spatial analysis methods, - understand and apply raster and network analysis functions in GIS, - apply GIS methods to identify suitable locations, - use statistical software programs in conjunction with GIS analyses, - execute simple regional geography modelling, - apply knowledge of GIS to advanced investigatory work, - present results both orally and in writing.

Required Knowledge

Univ: GIS and Spatial Analysis, 15 ECTS, GIS - Society and Environment, 15 ECTS, Business GIS, 15 ECTS, or equivalent.

Form of instruction

The course is taught in the form of lectures, laboratory lessons, seminars and/or field work. Participation in certain seminars and exercises may be mandatory. The laboratory work and exercises will be done on PC computers. Gender issues related to the course content will be integrated into the course. Some parts of the course may be taught in English.

Examination modes

Examination is based on presentation of independently completed assignments, assigned reports and written exams. A test will be given at the end of the course. The test is usually a written exam and may include both descriptive tasks and problem-solving tasks. Those students who do not pass the test at the regularly scheduled time are given the option of retaking the test shortly thereafter. A grade is given for the course only after all tests and mandatory assignments have been passed. The grades given for this course are pass with distinction, pass, or fail. More detailed instructions on the tests and assignments are given at the beginning of the course. The student cannot appeal a grade, for example to a higher authority, but the student may always make comments on the scoring or request that the examiner reconsider the decision. A student who has taken two examinations in a course or a part of a course without obtaining a passing grade is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (Higher Education Ordinance 6, Chap. 11b§). The student may submit a request for a different examiner to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER: Decisions about academic credit transfer are made on an individual basis.
