Contents

This course is based on Social law in Nordic Welfare context as a legal area and as a research field. Themes, such as alteration in the Public and the Private sector, the labor market and the support system, images and effects of state policies and individual and family characteristics in the Welfare state will be analysed and reflected up on from critical and socio-legal perspectives. The course will also strengthen the students’ holistic view on legal sources, legal actors and legal systems from an international and a comparative perspective on different theoretical and methodological approaches.

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student shall have the ability to:
- explain and analyze Social law as a legal area and as a research field from the distinctive circumstances prevailing in a Nordic Welfare context,
- critically analyse discourses in Nordic legal contexts and its relation to international legal systems, adjoining legal areas and comparative law, and
- apply theoretical and methodological tools on questions and problems concerning different legal issue on current topics in society.

Required Knowledge

A minimum of 90 university credits in one main field of social sciences, including an individual essay carrying at least 15 university credits and an introductory course in law carrying at least 15 university credits, or 120 university credits from the Law Programme, or equivalent qualifications. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A/5. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The course is a full time on-line course in English. The course is taught entirely through an electronic Learning Management System where the student takes part in lectures, mandatory assignments and other learning activities. The studies are characterized by a high degree of independent and active search for knowledge, and critical reflection, both individually and in groups.

Examination modes

Examination takes place through fulfillment of two parts. The first is the completion of mandatory assignments such as forum discussions, papers and oral discussions or presentations, individually or in groups. The second part consists of the completion and defence of an individual oral recorded presentation, and a discussion on another student’s oral recorded presentation.

Examination is in total the completion of mandatory assignments, the recorded presentation and the discussant role. For the first part the grades are Fail (U) or Pass (G). For the second part, as well as the entire course, the grades are Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG). The whole course is not graded until part 1 is fulfilled.

The examiner is entitled to decide on another form of examination if special circumstances is at hand.
