Contents

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of law and the interaction between law and society. Critical approaches to law and society, legal method as well as the legislative process and adjudication of law are the main objects of study. Interdisciplinary challenges to doctrinal studies of law are introduced. The course focuses on identifying socio-legal questions in various social and legal contexts. Different theoretical and methodological tools for critically examining and analyzing such questions are introduced.
 

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student shall have the ability to:
- understand and explain theoretical approaches to relations between law and society,
- understand and explain legislative processes and modes of adjudication of law
- understand how legal issues are solved and on a basic level critically analyse the adjudication of law,
- on a basic level understand and explain inter-disciplinary challenges to law, such as how law relates to gender, sexuality and ethnicity,
- apply theoretical and methodological tools in critical analyses of law and society.

Form of instruction

The course is taught in English and entirely through an electronic Learning Management System. This is where the student takes part in lectures and seminars. The studies are characterized by a high degree of independent and active search for knowledge, and critical scientific analysis.
 

Examination modes

Examination takes place through fulfillment of two parts. The first is the completion of mandatory assignments such as forum discussions, papers and oral discussions or presentations, individually or in groups. The second part consists of an individual written assignment.
 
For the first part the grades are Fail (U) or Pass (G). For the second part the grades are Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG). The grades for the whole course are Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG). The grade for the whole course in based on the examination of part 2. The whole course is not graded until the first part of the course is fulfilled.
