The course is for students accepted to the International Business program in Umeå.

The course objective is for participants to

• experience the problems and possibilities of working in an international environment
• enhance and develop their ability to independently plan and carry out a major task, which in turn includes:
• learn how to build and put into practice decision models and apply previously acquired knowledge

The course develops the student's understanding of how terms, working conditions, market conditions and other conditions affect the company's way of functioning in the sector and country. The course aims at integrating the previous acquired knowledge and through the internship develop the ability to run work tasks in an international environment. By doing the international internship plenty of opportunities are offered to use the applications of different theoretical approaches and models. Practical work thus provides a natural forum for theories to be used in a reality panorama.

The nature of work tasks and difficulty of the tasks is planned individually. The goal is that the internship work should be stimulating, instructive and challenging. The tasks may be of both operational- and strategic level.

Students choose an internship position according to their individual wishes and possibilities. Further discussion is done in consultation with the internship supervisor regarding the specification of work tasks that the internship entails.

The practical supervision at the internship company is developed individually between the tutor and the student.
The student shall produce a written report based on the guidelines that are communicated to the student when departing for the internship. The student should also participate to inform students whom intend to take the internship course in the coming semester.

Expected learning outcomes

Through the international internship the student should be able to:•apply previously acquired theoretical knowledge in the business field of study on a relevant economic activity in an international environment,

• relatively independently plan, manage and implement a specific project or research work to a company,
• apply investigation methodologies in their discipline to a practical problem,
• reflect upon how the country's culture and economic conditions affect the company's way to organize and operate;
• reflect upon their own attitudes and skills in an international environment,
• present their project or research work and other tasks both orally and in writing

Required Knowledge

Courses in Business Administration (90 ECTS) At Basic level (A-level) and Intermediate level (B-level) 60 ECTS at the Bachelor level (C-level) in Business Administration 30 ECTS including bashelor thesis 15 hp.

Form of instruction

The internship abroad is preceded by some preparation, for example, by collecting information about the organization/company in which the internship will be implemented. The internship may not be carried out in the country where the applicant holds a citizenship. The internship can be done during the sixth term in the program or the adjacent summer. The course shall consist of 10 weeks of internship. A written report shall be submitted within 2 months after the training period and it is a requirement for successful completion of the course.

Examination modes

Examination of the internship abroad is ongoing through the documentation and reporting of activities initiated by the placement itself, the responsible tutor and the responsible teacher. The overall examination thus becomes a process where the teacher with the advice of the tutor assesses the student's behavior onsite and in connection to the placement. In this context the written internship report is also an important basis for the examination.

The course is graded Pass or Fail, after the submission of the written internship report. In cases where the student exhibits gross incompetence or significant collaboration problems the examiner should, after informing the student, fail the student before the course ends. The student then interrupts their practice and gets the grade Fail for the course.

Academic credit transfer
Academic credit transfers are according to the University credit transfer regulations.

Other regulations

Repayment
If the student has received financial support from the Business School and the entire internship is not carried out the money paid shall be refunded. If the student intends to interrupt their internship they are obliged to notify Umeå School of Business and Economics and the Internship Coordinator before the interruption is made. If there are exceptional reasons beyond the control of the student (such as illness, accident, death or illness of close relative) then Umeå School of Business and Economics can liberate the student, who has received compensation, from some of the repayment obligation.
