Contents

The course deals with geographical and historical aspects of growth and welfare, from the global to local levels and from the early 20th century to present. During the course theories and methods for analyzing regional development and consequences of regional policy instruments are dealt with.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should have: - comprehensive knowledge in internationalization processes of relevance for national and regional development, - comprehensive knowledge in theories concerning localization, regions and regional development, - comprehensive knowledge regarding the development of regional policy instruments, in particular European regional policy, - comprehensive knowledge regarding the importance of transport- and communication systems for regional development, - comprehensive knowledge in methods of importance for research in economic history and geographical analysis, - ability to independently conduct minor investigations and evaluations of policies effects on regional development.

Required Knowledge

University studies consisting of 150 ECTS of which 90 ECTS in a major field of subject within Economics, Economic History, Social and Economic Geography, Informatics, Statistics, Sociology, Political Science, Law or equivalent subjects, including a thesis of 15 hp. Basic requirements for university studies in English equivalent to English A from Swedish Upper Secondary School.

Form of instruction

The course language is English. The course is based on lectures, seminars and exercises performed independently or in small groups. During the exercises teachers offer supervision, whereas the students are expected to independently choose theoretical approach, relevant methods and literature. Active participation in seminars is normally obligatory. A comprehensive knowledge in English and writing academic texts is necessary to accomplish the course. Relevant gender issues related to the course is continuously integrated in the course.

Examination modes

A number of individual and group exercises are included in the course. The course is examined by participating in compulsory exercises (seminars and group tasks) and passed written examination (reports and final exam). The course grade is based on joint judgment of the students’ performance during the course. Students who fail the scheduled final examination have the right to re-sit the examination soon afterwards. Examination based on the same syllabus is guaranteed two years after the first registration on the course. Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade. It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies. Credit transfer is always examined individually.
