Contents

This course studies the international economic and social development from the prehistoric time to the present day.
The course constitutes an introduction to international economic history and provides an overview of the long-term economic development from the Neolithic period up to present day. This means an outline on the altering organisation of production, economic growth, market development, trade, industrialisation, and institutional relations in different societies.

 

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the students will have:
- Basic knowledge about the long term international economic and social development and different economic-political systems.
- An understanding of the preconditions for industrialisation and economic development in different countries.
- Basic training in comparative analyses of the driving forces behind economic performances in different countries
- Basic knowledge about essential concepts for describing and analysing economic performance and international economic relations.
- The ability to apply a gender perspective on the international economic and social development.

Form of instruction

The course is based on lectures, seminar discussions and written examinations of different magnitudes.

Examination modes

A variety of mandatory assignments and examinations are applied as individually written papers, presentations of papers, seminar-discussions, oral and written examinations. According to the rules of the National Swedish Board of Universities and Colleges the grading will be made individually at all courses given by the Department of Economic History. Students who do not pass the first examination will be offered a second examination within two or three weeks. All students have the rights to take a test up to four times in order to pass. A student who has failed the examination twice has the right to ask the Board of the Social Sciences Faculty to appoint another teacher to examine him or her.
