Contents
This course studies European integration from the perspectives of integration theory and changes in the business context after 1945. The first module take the departure in the immediate Post-War situation in Europe with specific emphasis on the economic and political division expressed by the Cold War and the process of integration in Western and Eastern Europe. Here, the general economic-historical and political orientation provides the specific framework for the step-wise integration processes and the long-term economic development and relations up to the 21st Century. The second module provides deeper understanding of different aspects on the business development in a widening Europe since the 1990s. In this module, case studies of the European Union enlargement, deepening integration, and different integration scenarios constitute the framework for the analysis. In this context, concepts as internationalisation, globalisation, convergence and divergence become important.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course the students will have: - Firm knowledge in integration theory. - Firm knowledge in the history of European integration and development of national business systems. - Ability to apply comparativ method on issues like business structures and business systems with specific emphasis on regulations, market structure and organisation.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 180 credits and a Bachelors degree.English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Academic Training -minimum score 5.0 with no individual score below 4.5 (Tests taken before January 2005 not admissible or TOEFL - minimum score 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE, Alternatively 173 on computer based test with iBT61 is also required as well as basic entrance requirements for higher studies in Swedish language proficiency if the course is taught in Swedish.
Form of instruction
The course is based on lectures, seminar discussions, and written examinations of different magnitude.
Examination modes
A variety of mandatory assignments and examinations are applied as individually written papers, presentations of papers, seminar-discussions and written examinations. According to the rules of the National Swedish Board of Universities and Colleges the grading will be made individually at all courses given by the Deparment of Economic History. Students who do not pass the first examination will be offered a second examination within two or three weeks. All students have the rights to take a test up to four times in order to pass. A student who has failed the examination twice has the right to ask the Borad of the Social Sciences Faculty to appoint another teacher to examine him or her.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER For foreign students the seven grade ECTS transcription is used.
