Contents

The course provides in-depth knowledge in an optional specialist area within religious studies. The choice of subject in the course is influenced by the sub-subject in religious studies that the student has taken bachelor's courses and/or written a bachelor's thesis in. 

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding 
After completing the course, the student should be able to: 

  • report independently on central lines of thought in current research within the chosen special area; 
  • give a critical account of how different theories and methods are used within the chosen special area; 

Skills and abilities 
After completing the course, the student should be able to: 

  • review, analyse, and critically interpret research literature with particular regard to theory and method; 
  • argue for different theoretical and methodological positions; 

Evaluation ability and approach 
After completing the course, the student should be able to: 

  • evaluate the role of the chosen special field evaluate the role of the chosen special field within the wider discipline; 
  • have a reflexive attitude towards the acquisition of knowledge and the application of knowledge within the specialist area. 

 

Required Knowledge

90 ECTS religious studies/theology of which 15 ECTS religious studies at bachelor's level or teacher training towards the later years of elementary school or upper secondary school where the subject of religion is included.

Form of instruction

Teaching consists of individual supervision, supplemented by lectures and seminars where appropriate. 

Examination modes

Both written and oral examination is used in this course. There are two written assignments of 6 credits each, and an oral exam of 3 credits. The written assignments is graded U, G, or VG; the oral exam is graded U or G. To receive a grade of VG for the course as a whole, students must receive a VG on both written assignments and a G on the oral exam; to receive a passing grade for the course overall a mark of G is required in all parts of the course. 

Students who have passed may not undergo further examination for higher grades. For those students who have not been approved at the regular examination opportunity, a re-examination is arranged within two months after the ordinary examination opportunity, and another within one year, so-called collection examination.  

Deviations from the syllabus' examination form can be made for a student who has a decision on pedagogical support due to a disability. Individual adaptation of the examination form must be considered based on the student's needs. The examination form is adapted within the framework of the syllabus' expected study results. At the request of the student, the course teacher in consultation, in consultation with the examiner, shall promptly decide on an adapted form of examination. The decision must then be notified to the student.  

Other regulations

In the event that the syllabus expires or undergoes major changes, students are guaranteed at least three exams (including regular exams) according to the regulations in the syllabus on which the student was originally registered for a period of a maximum of two years from the previous syllabus expires or the course has been discontinued.  

In granting a university degree, this course may not be combined with any other course that has a similar content. In case of uncertainty, the student should consult the Director of Studies at the Department of Conceptual and Social Studies at Umeå University.
