New Trends in Intellectual History, 7.5 Credits

Over the past few decades, research in intellectual history has undergone changes related to globalization, digitalization and the changing conditions of intellectual activity. Instead of Western or national frameworks scholars understand and approach intellectual history from a global or transnational perspective. Moreover, traditional concepts in intellectual history such as idea, context and culture have been reconsidered. The value of longer-term narratives, “deep history”, has once again been articulated. In this course, the participants will, through a series of seminars and assignments, discuss current literature in the field. The course also gives opportunities for participants to deepen their knowledge and understanding by focusing on a specific topic area or approach.

After having completed the course the students will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of international and global intellectual history,
• Show awareness and a deeper understanding of the methodological challenges associated with global and transnational approaches within intellectual history,

Skills and Ability

• Clearly and coherently discuss and reflect on course content,
• Relate current trends in intellectual history to the historiography of history of ideas as well as other historical approaches,

Assessment and Approach

• Reflect on the role that new trends in intellectual history may have for the development of intellectual history as a field of scholarship as well as for the humanities and for public intellectual activities.

Required Knowledge

90 ECTS courses in history or history of science and ideas, or a Bachelors degree (180 ECTS) in closely related subjects such as history, philosophy and literature. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
 

Form of instruction

The course is taught completely online and involves only asynchronous learning activities. It is divided into three parts and is designed around the active participation of students. A computer and regular, reliable, high speed Internet access is needed.

Examination modes

Active participation in the course’s seminar discussions and reflection exercises is obligatory. The examination also includes a written essay and a book review.
