Contents

The course contains a general over-view of the historical development of political thought and a historiographical survey of the perception and usage of the concept of ideology. The course further includes an introduction to different kinds of theoretical and methodological tools facilitating a deeper understanding of the role and importance of political ideology through history. The course will be concluded by an individual assignment which subject, scope and literature will be decided in consultation with the appointed teacher. The course will be taught and examined in English, unless all students are Swedish speakers in which case the course language will be Swedish.

Expected learning outcomes

After having concluded the course, the student will be able to: - Account for the general traits in his historical development of political thought in the Western world during the modern period, - Account for and discuss the historical development and content of modern political ideologies such as liberalism, conservatism, socialism, fascism and political feminism, - Account for and discuss different usages of the concept of ideology through history, - Discuss and evaluate different theoretical and methodological tools for the study of ideology, - Independently formulate and analyse a scholarly problem in relation to the wider topic of the course, - Formulate these learning outcomes in speech and writing

Required Knowledge

University: 180 credits or 90 credits in History of Science and Ideas. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

Teaching will be given as tutorials and seminars, some of which may be held using webbased media. Regular lectures might also occur. Unless otherwise stated or agreed, all tutorials and seminars are obligatory.

Examination modes

The grades given will be failed, passed and passed with honours. Examination will be written and oral, and all elements of the course must be completed in order for the course to be concluded and the course certificate issued. Students who do not pass at the time of the normal written examination will be offered an opportunity to sit a further examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another examiner. A written request should be handed to the Faculty Board. INCLUSIONS The course can be included in the degrees Master of Arts (1 year) and Master of Arts (2 years).
