The course surveys a set of philosophical issues concerning how we relate to the world in thought and language. Do we necessarily think and talk about things via “descriptions” of them, or can we also relate to them more “directly”? It also considers the related issue of how one should understand so-called “Frege puzzles”, which concern cases where we in different contexts think and talk about one and the same thing without realizing that it is one and the same thing that we are thinking and talking about. The course considers classical contributions to these issues from Frege and Russell as well as more contemporary contributions.
