Contents
The course deals with the conditions and opportunities of art in today's society. It examines the challenges of today’s international art world in relation to the exhibition industry - encompassing museums, biennials and festivals, art in public, independent art spaces etc. - and the global art market and its peculiar economy as exercised by galleries and collectors. It also addresses issues connected to the in relation to the public hand (grants, commissions etc.). The focus is on economic and practical conditions necessary for a professional artistic career. The course is a continuation and deepening of the course Artistic Work in today's society, A and treats art and artistic work in a societal perspective. The various contexts within which the artist can act as well as the political, ethical, economic, legal and practical conditions of professional artists are in focus.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will
demonstrate in-depth insight into the political, ethical, economic, legal and practical challenges, conditions and opportunities of contemporary art in today’s society,
demonstrate the fundamental ability to explain and discuss verbally and in writing the art world’s mechanics, its activities and artistic issues in dialogue with different groups – in national and particularly, international contexts;
be able to handle artistic issues with a societal perspective in dialogue with different groups, as well
demonstrate the ability to make judgments in the field of contemporary art, taking into account relevant artistic, societal and ethical aspects.
Required Knowledge
Participation in the course assumes that the student is admitted to the Master’s programme at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University, and has obtained the grade Passed in at least 25,5 credits from the first term of studies.
Form of instruction
Teaching consists of seminars and practical exercises as well as individual assignments. Certain relevant written material is distributed during the course. Language of instruction is English.
Examination modes
The course is continuously examined in seminars where individual assignments are presented in writing and / or verbally. For students who have not been approved at the regular exam opportunity, a further examination opportunity will be arranged within three months as well as a sampling test within one year.
Grades are Pass or Fail.
