The academic calendar at Umeå University is divided into two semesters, each lasting 20 weeks. The autumn semester typically begins during the beginning of September and ends in the middle of January. The spring semester begins in the middle of January and ends during the early part of June.

Christmas holiday
There is no official Christmas break during the autumn semster. However, there is usually a break from classes around the days around Christmas (24 December) and New Year’s (1 January). The exact dates are determined by each department, so please contact your programme/department for information.
Easter holiday
There is no official Easter break during the spring semester. However, classes are often informally cancelled on the Thursday before Easter, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are official public holidays. The exact dates are determined by each department, so please check with the programme/department if classes are held or not.
Summer break
There is no official summer holiday at Umeå University, but the period of early June to late August can be considered as a summer break from university studies. The University is still open, as some summer classes are held during this period.
