General

The programme is organised as an educational programme with full-time studies and comprises 180 higher education credits, including studies and placement (VFU). The programme is conducted as on-campus teaching or as distance education with some sessions at the study venue. placement is undertaken within the agreement areas of the department/faculty which consist of the county of Västerbotten and parts of the county of Västernorrland.

On-campus education is conducted at the study venue, that is to say the town in which the student has been admitted to the programme. Placement, made up of a period of 32 weeks, is undertaken within the agreement areas of the department/faculty, where guaranteed admission can be provided. For those students admitted to Skellefteå, there is the possibility of changing their study venue to one of several specified towns in Västerbotten's inland. The number of positions in each respective town is limited.

The distance education is partially web-based. Sessions based at the study venue will be held 2-4 times per semester, each session runs for 2-5 days. Placement, made up of a period of 32 weeks, is undertaken within the agreement areas of the department/faculty, where guaranteed admission can be provided.

A model for nursing is included as a theoretical frame of reference in the programme's courses. The studies are characterised by active knowledge seeking, problem solving and reflection of an increasing complexity. The working methods vary between individual work, work in study groups, method and communication exercises, simulation exercises, seminars and lectures. The working methods promote integration between theoretical and clinical knowledge. The theoretical studies contribute to providing structure to the clinical studies and the clinical studies form a basis for analysis, processing and discussion of theoretical issues. In connection with placement, the department's teachers, students, clinical supervisors and principal supervisors collaborate regarding planning, content, implementation and evaluation. Occupational supervision linked to the clinical studies is provided where dialogue about the student's experiences from various nursing situations aims to develop professional and personal competence. During placement, the student follows the times applicable for the organisation in question, which may entail evenings, weekends and possibly nights.

The course contents are based upon scientific knowledge and tested experience. Intersectionality is also consistently addressed, meaning age, gender, class and transcultural aspects, such as local, regional, national and international perspectives of health/illness. Internationalisation aims to create positive conditions in the future occupational function within international and multicultural environments. The Nursing Programme has bilateral agreements with universities and higher education institutions around the world. This creates possibilities for internationalisation through studies abroad via exchange programmes as well as through interaction with foreign lecturers and exchange students here in Sweden. Studies abroad are preferably conducted during semester 4, 5 and 6.

The three-year programme has an intrinsic progression for both content and teaching, where a development from fundamental subject knowledge and methodology to increased complexity and specialisation in nursing takes place. This development comprises both the academic subject and the profession. The progression is expressed in, and operationalised through, the programme's themes: the Foundations and methods of nursing (year 1), Nursing in various phases of life (year 2), and Nursing in various contexts (year 3).

The theme of the Foundations and methods of nursing focuses on developing knowledge about the foundations of nursing, its methods and craft, its fundamental concepts and central issues and phenomena. The theme of Nursing in various phases of life focuses on developing complex and specific knowledge of nursing in various ages and phases with a focus on maintaining health and combating illness and disease based on specific needs. The theme of Nursing in various contexts, in year 3, focuses on consolidating the two previous years' learning and developing skills in relation to various settings and situations as well as organisation and leadership. Nursing based on the model for nursing and the nursing process are problemised and operationalised in all of the themes above.

Obligatory courses are the courses that all students accepted to the programme normally take. A student who attends the programme is guaranteed admission to the obligatory courses as long as the entry requirements are met. The course syllabi present the entry requirements applicable for each course.
The courses that are part of the programme, as well as the order in which they are taken, are shown under the title "Course syllabus".
