A minimum of 240 ECTS including a Bachelor's degree of equivalent first cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an Internationally recognized University. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS in the field of Public Health of which 5 ECTS must include basic health economics expertise. A minimum of 30 ECTS of the studies in Public Health must be at advanced level. In addition, Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper Secondary course English B/6.
After completing the programme, a student may apply for and obtain a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits), Main Field of Study: Public Health, Specialization: Health Economics, in accordance with the local degree description established by the Vice-Chancellor (See the Umeå University's website). Independent project (degree project)
For the award of a degree of Master of Science, the student must have completed an independent project (degree project) consisting of a minimum of 30 second-cycle course credits in the main field of study Public Health, of which at least 15 credits must be within the specialization health economics.

A student who believes that they have knowledge from previous studies or professional experience equivalent to a course or course element in the programme may apply for credit transfer. Public health science is an interdisciplinary discipline that generates and systematises knowledge about the population's health and about measures aimed at preserving and improving health. It concerns studying factors that can affect people's health and well-being, such as environmental issues, social conditions and lifestyles. It is also about the organization and working methods of the health care. Public health science is the field of knowledge that practical public health work must have as support in order to be knowledge-based.
The educational programme Second year of Master's Programme in Public Health with a Specialization in Health Economics (60 credits), consists of 2 semesters (1 year), which corresponds to courses totalling 60 higher education credits. The programme requires that the student has completed studies consisting of 60 credits in the field of public health.
The studies are characterized by a high degree of independence, actively seeking knowledge, problem solving, critical analysis and evaluation based on a scientific approach. The work formats vary between individual work, work in study groups, seminars and lectures. All teaching will be in English.
The independent project for a Master of Science (120 credits) consists of 30 higher education credits in the main field of study for the educational programme. During the second semester, the student completes an independent study project (15 or 30 credits) depending upon what has been included in their previous studies.
Compulsory courses are the courses all programme students normally are required to take. A student who has been admitted to the study programme is guaranteed a place on all compulsory courses, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for the course in question. The eligibility requirements are stated in each respective course syllabus.
