Studying Ecology

This page describes the teaching structure at our Master's Programmes. Please contact the study advisor if you have any further questions.

Work load

Most courses cover 10 weeks (=15 ETCS) and you are only studying one course at a time (no parallel reading). You will during most courses follow a traditional course set up with lectures. Normal weeks you are expected to participate and work equivalent to roughly 40 hours. Some of those hours are normal lectures or seminars, others lab work or group discussions as well as textbook reading on you own.

All teaching will be in English and all information about the courses can be found in English as well, if not please let us know what's missing.

Some courses also do both day long and extended fieldtrips. These require personal field equipment like rain protective clothes and shoes. Details about what's needed will be given when the course starts.

Seminars

Seminars are often used for discussing relevant scientific articles, current issues within the subject etc. Some of the courses use many seminars instead of lectures, so the individual participation is very important. Students at the programme are also encouraged to attend the higher seminars held by the Department where invited guests or our own staff presents their research.

Projects

During most courses at least one small project is done. During those you normally work in groups around a relevant topic. The students are expected to participate equally with collecting information, doing labs, writing and presenting their results.

Exams

Each course has two exam opportunities. The first exam is given at the end of the course and the second exam, for those not achieving a pass on the first attempt, is offered three to four weeks later. Additional exams are also offered in August before the semester starts.

Staff

The teachers are mainly professors and researchers from the Department of EMG but we try to involve guest professors to make use of their expert skills when possible. You will also meet our PhD-students as course assistants and project tutors. If you have course specific questions you can of course always contact the professors during normal office-hours.

Study counselling is available both at the department and through the central office.

You will also meet our study administrators quite often to find out exam results, get study result transcripts or other paperwork done.
