Master's Programme in Accounting

You have been admitted to the Master's Programme in Accounting at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, Umeå University. My name is Gisela Taube Lyxzén and I am the Programme Advisor. On this page you will find important information, please read it carefully. If you have any questions concerning the programme, you can use the contact form below. How to start

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    Install MFA for a more secure login
    To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

    Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

    If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

    Registration takes place at campus when the semester starts in the end of August 2020.

    The start of the autumn semester with lectures

    The autumn semester starts with lectures the 31st of August.

    The schedule for the first module, "Advance Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation 7.5 credits", will be published no later than the 3rd of August at the website mentioned above.

    Recommended arrival time

    You are recommended to arrive at least one week before lectures starts so that you can participate in all the introductory activities.

    There will be a special
    Welcome meeting for all International Students at
    USBE (=Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics) will be held at 9 a.m. on the 25th of August in the social science building on campus in s.205.

    The International Office at Umeå University will arrange an
    Orientation Course for international students starting 26th of August.
    It is recommended that all international students attend it.
    The schedule for that can be found here.

    The Business Student section of The Student Union called HHUS, will arrange a
    Welcome and team building activity for all newly admitted students
    at both undergraduate and master programs starting the 26th of August. Further information concerning this activity will be posted on their webpage in July: HHUS.se

    Late arrival

    You are recommended to arrive one week early before the start of lectures but at the very last you may arrive one week late,
    before 4.30 p.m. Monday the 7th of September.

    If you arrive later you will no longer have a seat at the program and will have to return home. If you fear that you will face some delay keep in touch with me, your Program Advisor.

    We have gathered all information that you will need during your time here at USBE on our student website (USBE=Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics).

    At the Student web of USBE  you will find information about schedules, exams, internship, thesis, studies abroad, degrees and career.
    (Click on the MENU at the top right hand corner of the webpage to access the different information).

    We have started a facebook group for all newly admitted students to this program. An e-mail with a link to the group will been sent out. If you have not received it and wish to join the group contact me. (The e-mail can also have ended up in your junk mail).

  • Information about the course for the first semester

    During the first semester of the programme you will study a 30 credit course called "Accounting Auditing and Control D 30 credits".

    The course syllabus with the expected learning outcomes and literature list is one and the same for the whole course (= the 1st semester). Your will study the course from the 31st of August until the 17th of January 2021.

    The course syllabus can be found here (It will be updated by the end of June).

    The course "Accounting Auditing and Control D 30 credits" consists of four different modules that you study for five weeks each in sequence one after the other.

    The first module is called "Advanced Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation 7.5 credits" (That is also the name of the first schedule).

  • Information about the first module

    You will find the schedule for the first module in the programme,
    "Advanced Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation, 7.5 credits",
    published no later than the 3rd of August here.

    Each module has a separate schedule that will be published one month before the start of the specific module.

    We use an educational plattform for these modules called Cambro.

    In Cambro you will find all the information you need for this module such as the  instructions for assignments, list of module participants and messages from the teacher.

    Remember that in order to start the first course and first module of that course you must first be registered. This will be done when you arrive on campus.

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

    If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

  • Welcome Fair

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

  • Join a student union

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical and Health Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • Access to Microsoft Office 365

    Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
